Tri-Met views security
as a top priority. As a result, we're continually working to make your transit trip as
safe as possible.
Security Personnel
Thirty-three (33) sworn law enforcement officers, in addition to fare inspectors and
supervisors, patrol and respond to transit emergencies.
Six (6) Rider Advocates ride buses and trains in North and Northeast Portland to
provide a presence that discourages disruptive behavior. They carry radios to call for
assistance if necessary. TriMet contracts with the Northeast Coalition of
Neighborhoods for this program.
Hi-Tech Assistance
- Radios on all buses and MAX trains provide operators with access to help
- All MAX trains and over half the bus fleet are currently equipped with security cameras
- Tracking systems that pinpoint the exact location of buses and MAX helps speed response
- Cameras monitor the Gresham, Sunset and Hillsboro parking garages
- Cameras serve as a deterrent to criminal activity and the video can be used as evidence
for prosecuting transit crimes
Tougher Penalties
To help maintain the safety and integrity of the transit system, TriMet has increased
the penalty for fare evasion and disruptive behavior on buses and MAX. The penalty
for fare evasion has increased from $77 to up to a maximum of $250, and the maximum
exclusion period has increased from 90 days to six months. Disruptive conduct and/or no
proof of fare may result in fines, exclusion or arrest.
Night Stop
From 8PM-5AM bus operators will make special stops along the route for riders traveling
alone.
